Grade 12 Students Develop ‘Jyoya’ AI Assistant
Kusal Pokharel and Asal Pokharel of Bhattikhana, Phedikhola Rural Municipality–1, have developed an AI assistant named “Jyoya.” Kusal and Asal, who are studying Computer Science in Grade 12 at Chandidanda Secondary School, developed the AI assistant through a Python program under the rural municipality’s IT project.
Kusal Pokharel said “Jyoya” was prepared over a period of about six months with the support of IT teacher Bishal Lamichhane. According to him, “Jyoya,” which can be used through a laptop or computer, can play songs, open YouTube, operate websites, run Google Chrome, and provide information related to time and weather according to the user’s instructions.
Pokharel said “Jyoya” was developed while learning through AI and YouTube. He mentioned that it currently does not have image generation and database features. Although the goal is to make it advanced like ChatGPT, he said it currently runs only on a personal computer and that there is a plan to further refine it and develop it in a broader form in the coming days.
IT teacher Lamichhane said the project concept was presented with the objective of teaching students new ideas, and “Jyoya” was created on that basis. According to him, the project is useful for students’ learning and also has the potential to be used in professional and risky tasks in the future.
The supporting robot connected with “Jyoya” is currently operated through a remote control. Lamichhane said the goal is to make it operate and walk through a program in the coming days.
It has been stated that the project, developed in the course of learning, was named “Jyoya” from a feeling of happiness. It will be controlled through a program, while the robot will carry out the implementation.
The project, presented at the First Science and Technology Exhibition organized by Phedikhola Rural Municipality, has shown the possibility of digital innovation developed at the local level. Rural Municipality Chairperson Ghanashyam Subedi described “Jyoya” as an example of the creative ability of students from rural areas.
Phedikhola Rural Municipality has been running the “One School, One IT Teacher” program for the past six years, expanding IT labs and digital education at the school level. IT classes are being conducted in nine secondary schools within the rural municipality, and 1,600 students are involved in IT education.
Chairperson Subedi said the IT campaign has been continued despite limited resources, with the objective of making community schools technology-friendly.
