KMC's Crackdown on Private Schools: Transparency in Scholarships Mandatory

Kathmandu's Metropolitan Mayor, Balendra Shah, has issued a stern warning to all private schools operating within the metropolitan city. He has made it crystal clear that failure to comply with regulations pertaining to scholarship details could lead to the revocation of their operating permissions.

Emphasizing on Accountability

Shah insisted that the metropolis will revoke approval of any private schools that do not provide details about their scholarship programs. As part of his endeavor to make education more transparent and accessible, these measures aim to ensure that all educational institutions strictly adhere to the established regulations.

According to Shah, this action would be taken in line with sub-section 4 of section 57 of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Education Act, 2075. Schools failing to provide necessary information will face strict consequences, including the possible cancellation of their permission or approval to operate.

Current Compliance Status

As of now, Shah shared that 465 out of 504 private schools in the Kathmandu metropolitan area have complied by submitting scholarship details. This response rate demonstrates a promising start towards full compliance.

Impact on Students

The mayor highlighted that more than 13,000 students from the targeted categories have already benefitted from various scholarships. Once all details have been inspected, the complete list of scholarship recipients will be published, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Final Chance for Defaulting Schools

For those schools that have yet to provide the necessary details, Shah extended a lifeline. They will be given one final opportunity to submit the details, but this will come at a cost. A fine of up to Rs 1 lakh will be imposed on these schools as a penalty for their initial non-compliance.

This initiative underscores the administration's commitment to enhancing transparency in the education sector. It sends out a strong message about the importance of following regulations and ensuring equal opportunities for all students.
