National College to Offer Master of Psychology Under Kathmandu University

National College announces a two-year Master of Psychology (MPsych) program affiliated with Kathmandu University, offering six specializations and 60 credits.

National College, Kathmandu, has announced plans to introduce a two-year Master of Psychology (MPsych) program affiliated with Kathmandu University (KU). The postgraduate program will be offered in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS).

The program's inaugural ceremony was scheduled for October 8 at 1:30 PM at the National College Auditorium Hall in Kathmandu.

According to the college, the MPsych program will consist of four semesters carrying 60 academic credits. The curriculum has been designed to combine advanced academic study, research, fieldwork, and supervised professional experience, with an emphasis on practical learning.

Six Specialization Areas

The Master of Psychology program will offer students opportunities to specialize in six areas of psychology:

  1. Clinical Psychology

  2. Counselling Psychology

  3. Geropsychology

  4. Forensic Psychology

  5. Child and Adolescent Psychology

  6. Community, Disaster, Mental Health and Trauma Psychology

Program Objectives and Curriculum

Prof. Dr. Rita Shrestha, Head of the Psychology Department at National College, said the program aims to address the growing demand for trained psychology professionals in education, healthcare, community development, research, organizational settings, and other emerging fields.

The curriculum will incorporate lectures, seminars, discussions, case-based learning, practical activities, fieldwork, research, presentations, and supervised professional practice.

Students will also be encouraged to investigate emerging psychological and social issues through systematic, evidence-based research.

According to the college, the program will emphasize ethical professional practice, research, community engagement, interdisciplinary learning, and evidence-based approaches to psychological study and practice.

National College Principal Madhav Prasad Neupane said the program aims to strengthen connections between psychological knowledge, professional practice, research, and social responsibility.

He added that the program is also intended to create opportunities for academic collaboration at national and international levels.

Institutional Collaboration and Research Opportunities

National College stated that the MPsych program will seek to facilitate academic exchange, professional networking, and collaborative research involving universities, research institutions, government agencies, healthcare institutions, and communities.

The college expects these partnerships to support professional learning, research activities, and cooperation across institutions working in psychology and related disciplines.

National College described the introduction of the MPsych program as an important step toward strengthening advanced psychology education, professional training, research, and evidence-based psychological practice in Nepal.
