Public Service Commission Chairperson and Members to be Vacant from 23 March:

The tenure of the chairperson and members of the Public Service Commission is coming to an end on March 23, 2021. Therefore, the spokesperson of the Public Service Commission Toyanarayan Subedi informed that the commission will be without officials from March 24. The commission is currently chaired by Umesh Mainali and has four members Brinda Hada, Ashok Jha, Brahmadev Rai, and Krishnachandra Jha.

The service period of the office bearers of the Constitutional Commission is six years. According to the same provision, the service period of all the five office bearers working in the commission will be completed on the same day from March 23, 2021.

There is a constitutional provision to appoint a chairperson and four members in the commission on the recommendation of the Constitutional Council. But even before the promulgation of the constitution, the current members of the commission were appointed. At that time, a chairman and six members were appointed. Even after the promulgation of the constitution, the previously appointed officials were retained. Therefore, there were more than two officials working in the commission.

Of the six office bearers, Govinda Kusum retired a year ago and Mr. Dhakal about four months ago due to the age limit. After the resignation of Kusum and Dhakal, five officials are working in the commission. The age limit for the office bearers of the Constitutional Commission is 65 years.

There is no immediate meeting of the Constitutional Council. Therefore, the commission is unlikely to get office bearers in a few days. The absence of office bearers will affect the performance of the commission. "Being without officials can have a big impact on the performance of the commission," said spokesperson Subedi. The Civil Service Act, 2049 BS stipulates that the chairperson of the commission should chair the promotion committee to recommend the promotion of the secretary in the civil service.

Provided that the promotion committee shall be chaired by a member of the commission appointed by the chairperson or chairperson of the commission to recommend promotion at the level of joint secretary, deputy secretary, and section officer.
