The harmful impact of “textbook-centered” teaching
In Nepal’s context, the textbook prepared by the Curriculum Development Centre (CDC) often becomes “everything” for teachers.
When a teacher flips the pages and says, “Today we will read Lesson 3,” that is where the educational mistake begins.
Research shows that a textbook is only a source material, not the goal.
What is the real problem?

When teachers are unfamiliar with the specific “competencies” and “learning outcomes” set by the curriculum for each level and grade, they focus on “finishing the course” rather than “teaching for learning.” -

A textbook can cover only about 20% to 30% of the curriculum’s concepts.
For example, the Social Studies curriculum may say “develop critical thinking in students,” but the textbook may contain a lesson that only makes students memorize “the names of Nepal’s Prime Ministers.”
A teacher who does not read the curriculum ignores critical thinking entirely. -
Mismatch (alignment gap) between exams and classroom teaching
There is a gap between the Specification Grid (Specification Table) and teaching activities.
A teacher may teach as if telling a story in class, but the specification grid demands questions that measure “Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS).”
The misconception: “I have been teaching like this for 20 years”
Many experienced teachers share a common misconception:
“Why do I need the curriculum? I know everything by heart.”
But in my 20 years of experience, I have seen that such teachers are repeating one year of experience 20 times (One year of experience repeated 20 times).
Times change. Student psychology changes. Technology changes. And most importantly—the curriculum changes.
When the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2076 has already shifted from knowledge-centered education to skill- and competency-based education, a teaching style from 2060 is not only irrelevant today—it can be harmful.
The Anatomy of Curriculum
The curriculum is not just a pile of paper. It is a “constitution” that directs every classroom activity.
In Nepal’s context, how should teachers understand it?
The four pillars of curriculum
When studying any curriculum, teachers must examine these four aspects as if doing an “X-ray”:

What should students be able to do by the end of the year?
Example (Grade 10 Science): Students should not only be able to “state” Newton’s laws, but also “identify and analyze” them in tools used in daily life. -
Elaboration of content
How deep should teaching go? (Scope and Sequence)
Teachers often teach either less than necessary or more than necessary.
If the curriculum says “introduce students to local plants,” teaching university-level “botany” is a waste of time. -
Pedagogy (teaching method)
The curriculum clearly defines how teaching should happen.
NCF 2076 emphasizes “project work” and “participatory learning.”
But using only the lecture method is like acting against the constitution. -
Assessment plan
How should student learning be measured? (Formative vs. Summative Assessment)
The curriculum clearly states that quarterly exams alone are not assessment.
Vertical and horizontal alignment

According to Jerome Bruner’s “spiral curriculum” theory, there is a deep connection between “animals” taught in Grade 3 and “biodiversity” taught in Grade 9.

In this section, I will not speak vaguely. What should you do tomorrow morning when you go to school? Here is a step-by-step process.
Step 1: Unpack the curriculum (Unpacking the Standards)
Before teaching any lesson, adopt the method of “curriculum unpacking.”
This method asks three questions:

WHAT (What to teach?)
Circle the nouns and verbs found in the curriculum’s learning outcome (LO).
Example (Grade 5 Science):
“Observe plant growth using different types of fertilizers.”

Many teachers only make students memorize “types of fertilizers” (Knowledge Level).
But the curriculum demands “use” and “observe” (Application & Analysis Level).

Step 2: Backward Design Approach

We cannot speak only about foreign contexts. What does Nepal’s National Curriculum Framework (NCF 2076) expect from teachers?
The essence of the integrated curriculum (Grades 1–3)
In Nepal, an “integrated curriculum” has been implemented for Grades 1–3.
But the irony is that teachers are still saying, “Now Nepali period, now Science period.”
Without deep study of the curriculum, they have not understood the “multidisciplinary” structure of the subject “Mero Serofero.”
The curriculum says: teach concepts from different subjects within a single theme.
A teacher who studies the curriculum can teach a theme like “Our Community” while integrating:

Competency-based assessment
In Nepal, most teachers ask questions based on “recall.”
Wrong practice: “What is the height of Mount Everest?” (Knowledge)

The curriculum for Grades 4–8 and 9–12 clearly provides for CAS (Continuous Assessment System) and practical marks.
But when teachers do not read the curriculum, they use internal assessment marks as “free gifts.”
This is not only unethical—it is playing with students’ futures.
Neglect of the local curriculum
Nepal’s constitution and the Education Act have allocated a 20% weight to the local curriculum.
But teachers who do not study the curriculum misuse this time as:

“time to teach main subjects”
An expert teacher sees this “flexible space” as an opportunity to connect students to:

Time management
Teachers who do not look at the curriculum always complain, “We ran out of time.”
Why?
Because they give unnecessary importance to every small detail of the textbook.
The curriculum separates the “core concepts.”
A teacher who understands the curriculum can prioritize:

Ending the misconception of “questions came outside the course”
After exams, people often say:
“Questions came outside the course!”
In reality, the question may be outside the textbook, but it is not outside the curriculum.

Curriculum in the age of technology and AI
Today, students have Google in their hands.
A teacher cannot succeed by providing only “information.”
The curriculum now emphasizes:

Inclusive education
Our classrooms are diverse.
