Long Study Hours Don’t Mean Better Learning: Scientific and Practical Methods for Effective Learning
A deep misconception is widespread in Nepali society: “The more time you sit in front of books, the more you know.” Students are pressured to study from 4 a.m. until late at night. Parents feel happy when they see their children studying continuously for 10–12 hours. But is there really a direct relationship between the amount of time spent and the quality of learning?
Psychological research and neuroscience (brain science) say: no.
Studying for a long time while the brain cannot absorb it is like pouring water into a pot with holes. In this article, based on scientific facts, we will discuss why long hours of study are not always productive and how you can learn more and learn effectively in less time.
Cognitive Load and the Brain’s Limits
Even though our brain is like a supercomputer, it has a fixed working capacity. According to Cognitive Load Theory, our working memory can hold only a limited amount of information at one time.
When a student studies continuously for 4–5 hours, information overload occurs in the brain. This is called cognitive overload. In this condition, the brain stops transferring new information into long-term memory. As a result, the student feels like they studied, but during exams or when needed, the brain cannot recall that information.
What does research say?
According to various educational psychologists, the average time the human brain can work with full focus is only about 25 to 50 minutes. After that, the brain needs a short break. Continuous study without breaks creates mental fatigue, which weakens decision-making ability and analytical power.
The Forgetting Curve (The Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve)
German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus proposed the concept of the “forgetting curve” in 1885. His research showed how quickly we forget what we study.

If you study for 10 hours in one day and do not revise it until the next week, that 10 hours of effort goes to waste. The solution is not “studying more hours,” but spaced repetition.
Solution: Instead of studying 10 hours in one day, studying the same subject for 1 hour across 10 different days is more effective. This helps move information into the brain’s long-term storage.
‘Passive’ vs ‘Active’ Learning
A major problem for students who study for long hours is that they engage in passive learning. Turning pages, highlighting text, or copying notes is passive learning. It does not challenge the brain much.
Active learning methods include:
Feynman Technique (The Feynman Technique): After you think you understand a topic, try explaining it in simple language as if you are teaching a 5-year-old. If you cannot explain it simply, understand that you have not yet understood it well.
Active Recall (Active Recall): Close the book and ask yourself what you just studied. Force the brain to search for the answer. This method is far more effective than simply rereading.
Sleep and Memory Consolidation
Among Nepali students, staying awake all night during exams is common. But the scientific fact is the opposite. What we study during the day becomes organized and stable in the brain only during sleep. This process is called memory consolidation.
When we sleep, the hippocampus transfers temporarily stored information to the neocortex. If you do not get enough sleep (at least 7–8 hours), the brain cannot save what you studied all day. So, studying more by sleeping less is like typing a file on a computer and shutting it down without saving.
‘Pillar’ and ‘Pomodoro’: The Art of Time Management
Instead of studying for long hours, you can study “smartly” by using these methods:
Pomodoro Technique (Pomodoro Technique): Study with full focus for 25 minutes and take a 5-minute break. After repeating this process 4 times, take a longer break of 15–30 minutes. This keeps the brain fresh and prevents fatigue.
Deep Work (Deep Work): According to Cal Newport’s concept, 2 hours of distraction-free study (without mobile or social media) is more productive than 8 hours of distracted study.
Nutrition and Brain Health
As a researcher, I want to emphasize that studying is not only a mental process but also a physical process. The brain uses about 20% of the body’s total energy.
Water’s role: Dehydration reduces concentration. Keep a water bottle on your study table.
Omega-3 and antioxidants: Walnuts, almonds, and green leafy vegetables strengthen communication between brain cells (neurons).
Reduce sugar: Too much sugar or junk food suddenly increases blood glucose and then drops it, which can cause “brain fog” (a dull, cloudy mind).
Environment and Digital Distraction
We think keeping a mobile phone nearby while studying does not matter. But “multitasking” (doing many tasks at the same time) is an illusion. When a notification arrives, your attention breaks. According to research, once attention is disrupted, it takes the brain an average of 23 minutes to return to the same level of focus.
So, instead of studying for many hours while using the phone, it is better to keep the phone in another room and study for just 1 hour.
Practical Action Plan for Students

Change your routine goal: Instead of saying, “Today I will study for 8 hours,” set a goal like, “Today I will clearly understand these 3 topics and practice them.”

Notes method: Do not copy textbook sentences exactly. Create a mind map (Mind Map) or diagrams in your own words.

Try teaching: Explain a difficult topic to a friend. This is one of the most effective ways to learn.

Physical exercise: A 20-minute walk or exercise daily produces a protein called BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), which helps you learn new things.
