Course purpose and academic focus

Diploma in Architecture Engineering is designed to prepare mid-level technical human resources with knowledge and skills related to architecture engineering. Its academic scope includes planning, design, building construction, drafting, and technical work connected with rural and urban development.

The course develops progressively. The first year establishes the engineering and science base. The second year shifts strongly toward architectural drawing, CAD, surveying, graphics, materials, model making, construction, and design. The third year brings these areas together through structural study, building services, working drawings, quantity surveying, construction management, and project work.

Eligibility and entrance

Eligibility: Applicants may enter through either of the following academic routes:

SLC pass, SEE, or equivalent with a minimum C Grade (2.0 Grade Point) in Mathematics and Science and 1.6 Grade Point or equivalent in English, subject to the admission provisions of the Office of the Controller of Examinations, CTEVT.

Applicants with a pre-diploma in a related subject or equivalent require a minimum of 68.33%.

Applicants must also pass the entrance examination administered by CTEVT.

Duration and study system

Duration: Three academic years

Academic System: Six-semester system

Each semester consists of 19.5 academic weeks, including the evaluation period, with at least 15 weeks of teaching and learning. The medium of instruction is English and/or Nepali. Students require a minimum of 90% attendance in each subject to appear in the respective final examination.

First-year foundation

The first semester covers Applied Nepali, Applied English, Engineering Mathematics I, Engineering Physics I, Engineering Chemistry I, Engineering Drawing I, and Computer Application.

The second semester continues with Engineering Mathematics II, Engineering Physics II, Engineering Chemistry II, Workshop Practice I, Engineering Drawing II, and Applied Mechanics. These two semesters establish the mathematics, science, communication, computing, drawing, mechanics, and workshop base used in later architectural study.

Second-year architecture subjects

Architecture-specific study becomes central in the third semester. Students take Measured Drawing & Drafting, Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) I, Drafting I, Surveying I, Arts and Graphic I, Building Materials-I, Introduction to Architecture, and Workshop Practice II.

Measured Drawing & Drafting involves freehand sketches, building measurement, dimensioning, scale drawings, area calculations, and preparation of building drawings. CAD I introduces computer-aided two-dimensional drafting.

Workshop Practice II adds practical exposure to bricklaying and carpentry, including the handling of tools, basic construction work, and safety practices.

The fourth semester covers Arts and Graphic II, Building Materials II, Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) II, Surveying II, Drafting II, Architectural Model Making I, Building Construction-I, and Building Design-I.

Building Design-I introduces the design and development of a single-family residential building. Students work with site analysis, spatial requirements, furniture and fixture layouts, planning and orientation, and the preparation of plans, elevations, sections, and three-dimensional views.

Third-year technical and project work

The fifth semester includes Construction Management, Architectural Model Making II, Building Services I, Steel and Timber Structures, Building Construction II, Building Design II, and Working Drawing I.

The sixth semester contains Building Services II, Reinforced Concrete Structures, Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) III, Building Construction III, Working Drawing II, Quantity Surveying, Entrepreneurship Development, and Project Work.

Quantity Surveying introduces estimating and quantity calculations for construction works. Practical exercises include estimates for walls, buildings, reinforced-concrete structural components, roofs, staircases, retaining walls, septic tanks, and other building works.

Project Work in the final semester gives students a separate academic component in which knowledge gained across drawing, design, construction, and related technical areas is brought into project-based study.

Practical learning and technical skills

The course has a substantial drawing and practical component. Students work with measured drawings, CAD, surveying, architectural graphics, workshop practice, model making, building design, working drawings, quantity surveying, and project work.

Through these subjects, students may develop abilities in architectural drafting, computer-aided drawing, building measurement, graphical presentation, site-related study, model preparation, residential building design, construction detailing, estimation, and preparation of technical drawings.

At MIST, the broader academic support system includes practical exercises, smart-board teaching, weekly sample examinations, digital notes, scholarship counselling, and e-library access.

Examination and completion

Both internal and final assessments form part of the evaluation system. Students must complete internal assessment requirements before appearing in the final examination.

For core subjects, the minimum pass requirement is 40% in theory and 50% in practical. Students must also obtain the required pass marks in the internal assessment and final examination of each subject.

Successful completion requires passing all components of all subjects across the six semesters. Students who meet these requirements are awarded the Diploma in Architecture Engineering.

After successful completion, graduates are eligible for positions equivalent to Non-gazetted 1st class/Level 5 (technical), as prescribed by the Public Service Commission of Nepal and other related agencies.
