Celebrating Library Day: A Call for Revitalizing Libraries in Nepal

Event 31 Aug 2024 340

This Library Day, we recognize the crucial role of libraries in promoting knowledge and literacy. However, many libraries in Nepal are struggling to adapt to the digital age, where information is increasingly accessed online.

The Need for Digital Transformation

Digital transformation is essential for libraries to remain relevant. While technology allows instant access to information, many libraries in Nepal are still limited to physical books, lacking the resources to digitize their collections.

Challenges Facing Nepal’s Libraries

Many libraries in Nepal face financial and administrative challenges that hinder modernization. The absence of a Library Act and inadequate funding have stalled efforts to digitize libraries. A recent survey shows that only 227 of Nepal’s 928 community libraries are functioning well, with many public libraries closing due to insufficient support.

A Call to Action

On Library Day, we must urge the government to prioritize libraries, as in developed countries where a portion of the education budget is dedicated to them. Many districts in Nepal still lack a single library, particularly in underserved areas like Karnali Province.

Reimagining the Future of Libraries

Libraries in Nepal fall into four categories:

  1. Community and Public Libraries: Examples include Keshar Library and Dilliraman Library.

  2. Educational Libraries: Found in universities, colleges, and schools.

  3. Special Libraries: Focused on specific fields like law, medicine, and engineering.

This Library Day, let’s commit to supporting the future of Nepal’s libraries. By embracing digital transformation and ensuring proper funding, we can make libraries more accessible and relevant in today’s world.

Let’s celebrate Library Day by taking concrete steps to strengthen our libraries, ensuring they continue to serve as vital resources for all.
