Dan Bahadur Karki Appointed 33rd IGP of Nepal Police
Dan Bahadur Karki has been appointed as the 33rd Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Nepal Police. The decision was made by the Council of Ministers in its meeting held on Monday.
Incumbent IGP Dhiraj Pratap Singh is retiring on Kartik 26 upon completion of the 30-year service period. He had assumed leadership of Nepal Police from Bhadra 19.
Karki was selected from among contenders in the same batch, including Additional Inspector General (AIG) Rajan Adhikari and AIG Dr. Manoj Kumar KC. AIG Siddhi Bikram Shah was also considered a contender for the IGP position.
In Baisakh 2082, Karki was promoted to AIG together with Chandrakuber Khapung and was placed first in the seniority list. Karki entered Nepal Police as an Inspector on Chaitra 18, 2054. In the absence of any changes to the Police Act and Regulations, he will lead the Nepal Police organization until Chaitra 17, 2084.
Key Assignments and Responsibilities
During the first day of the Gen-Z protest, where a teenager lost his life in a shooting incident, Karki was assigned to the Valley Police Office the following day. In this context, he left the Human Resource Development Department at the Nepal Police Headquarters and reported to the Valley Police Office on Bhadra 24.
In 2080, during the investigation of the fake Bhutanese refugee case, Karki was serving as Chief of the Kathmandu District Police Range. AIG Dr. Manoj Kumar KC, who was ranked third on the AIG merit list, had initiated the investigation, and Karki supported this process.
Karki’s team was involved in preparing the investigation report and coordinating with the Office of the Government Attorney for prosecution in the case.
Role in the Fake Bhutanese Refugee Case
In connection with the network accused of falsely promising to send individuals to the United States as Bhutanese refugees, former Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand and his personal secretary Narendra KC were arrested on Baisakh 27, 2080.
In the same case, former Deputy Prime Minister Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Prateek Thapa (son of former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa ‘Badal’), then Home Secretary Tek Narayan Pandey, and intermediary Bechan Jha are in custody for trial.
Similarly, Keshav Prasad Dulal and Sanu Bhandari are also in prison on charges related to the refugee scam. The investigation and prosecution of this case had a significant impact on the political sphere of Nepal.
