Government-Teacher Agreement Implementation in Discussion - Ongoing Talks with Teachers Regarding the Agreement
Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Raghuji Pant stated that the government is discussing implementing the agreement made with teachers in Baisakh 2082.
There has been discussion that a bill related to school education is being pushed forward contrary to the agreement with teachers. At Sunday’s Parliamentary Committee on Education, Health, and Information Technology meeting, Minister Pant said that although the government is under financial pressure, discussions are ongoing on incorporating those agreements into the education bill.
Discussion on Incorporating the Agreement in the Education Bill
Committee members demanded clarity on the government’s position on various issues in the bill. Minister Pant said that discussions are in progress with the Nepal Teachers' Federation and that the government will present its position in the committee after one week.
At the minister’s request, Committee Chairperson Ammar Bahadur Thapa instructed the government to present its official position on the bill at next week's meeting.
Nine-Point Agreement with Teachers
On Baisakh 17, the government signed a nine-point agreement with the teachers, following nearly a month-long protest in the capital.
Teachers have warned of resuming protests if the Education Act is not introduced in line with the agreement. Minister Pant said, “However, the government is committed to implementing the nine-point agreement at any cost.”
Government’s Financial Limitations
Minister Pant explained that fulfilling the teachers’ demands would impose a financial burden on the government, and therefore, the Ministry of Education alone cannot make decisions on the matter.
The committee meeting also began discussions on the report submitted by the subcommittee.
