Kailali Teachers Turn Dashain Holidays into Learning and Growth
Dashain festivities have filled villages and towns with excitement, and schools across the country are closed for nearly a month to celebrate Dashain and Tihar.
But for many teachers in Kailali, this holiday is more than just a break — it’s a chance to do something meaningful.
Turning Holidays into Opportunities
Buddhiram Chaudhary, Principal of Himalaya Secondary School, Ghiyaka, is spending his holiday caring for his crops, planting vegetables, and reading books that add value to life.
“During the school year, I barely get time for these things,” he shared with a smile. “This is when I can take care of my paddy field and vegetable garden. I have also set aside mornings and evenings for reading.”
Farming and Extra Income
At Padma Basic School, Principal Jang Bahadur Chaudhary is busy producing and selling vegetable seedlings. His nursery is full of healthy green plants ready for sale.
“I’ve been doing this for years,” he said. “This long break is perfect for growing seedlings, and sales are usually good this season. Spending my days in the field keeps me productive, and it feels good knowing my family has fresh vegetables to eat.”
He explained that the income from seedling sales makes the holidays even more worthwhile.
Keeping Students Connected to Learning
Some teachers are using the break to keep students engaged in their studies.
Kammansingh Bohara, Principal of Kalika Basic School in Chaugurdi, invites grade 4 and 5 students to school every Sunday.
“Children forget what they’ve learned if they stay away from school too long,” Bohara explained. “I give them homework, review lessons with them, and make sure they stay on track.”
Family, Farming, and Study
For Raghunath Upadhyay, Principal of Janaprakash Basic School in Baghmara, the holidays are a time to work with his family, grow winter vegetables, and stay connected to learning.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to spend time with my family while working in the field,” he said. “I’m also continuing my own study and practice to stay sharp.”
A Message from Education Officials
Tikapur Education Officer Naresh Awasthi encourages teachers and students to use the holidays well.
“This is a time to celebrate festivals with joy, learn about our culture, and stay active,” he said. “Working in vegetable gardens, reading, and getting involved in creative or social work makes the holidays meaningful.”
