CTEVT Exam Papers Burned During Gen Z Protest
Thousands of students under the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) have lost their exam papers after fires broke out during the Gen Z protest held on Bhadra 23 and 24. Around 15,000 answer sheets from various CTEVT-affiliated institutions were completely destroyed.
The papers had been kept at different police posts for safekeeping once exams were over. Unfortunately, when protestors set fire to several police posts and vandalized property, the stored papers were caught in the blaze.
CTEVT’s Member Secretary, Mahesh Bhattarai, shared that answer sheets stored at 18 police posts in Bagmati Province and five in Koshi Province were burned. Most of the destroyed papers were from Kathmandu. The affected students were studying in diploma and pre-diploma programs related to engineering, health, and other technical fields.
Students’ Situation and CTEVT’s Response
For many students, this incident has been devastating. Their year-long preparation and hard work vanished in an instant. To help students continue their academic progress, CTEVT has decided to restart the postponed exams from Kartik 30.
In addition, exams will be re-conducted from Mangsir 4 for those whose papers were destroyed. According to Bhattarai, this decision aims to make sure every student gets a fair chance to prove their ability and complete their academic year.
Plan for Upcoming Exams
Bhattarai explained that both the postponed and re-examinations will be completed within the month of Mangsir.
Some students have expressed frustration about having to take the exams again, saying it puts extra pressure on them. They have requested that marks from the day the papers were burned be given through internal evaluation instead.
Why Re-Examination Is Necessary
CTEVT has clarified that internal evaluation is not possible in this case. The council believes that re-examining is the only fair and transparent way to assess students.
Bhattarai said that fair evaluation is vital for the students’ future and for maintaining the credibility of the CTEVT system. He emphasized that retaking the exams will ensure both fairness and recognition at the national and international level.
