Teachers’ Union to Launch Protest Over School Education Bill

The Nepal Teachers’ Federation has announced its decision to launch protests, stating that ongoing discussions in the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Health, and Information Technology regarding the School Education Bill have failed to address the main demands of teachers and staff.

The Federation, in its meeting on Thursday, decided to begin protests in the second week of Bhadra. On Friday, it issued another statement declaring that unresolved issues in the Bill will now be decided through protest.

Call for Preparedness and Government Accountability

Urging all teachers and staff to be prepared for the movement, the Federation stated that the government will bear full responsibility for any inconvenience caused by the protests.

According to the Federation, the Bill does not include agreed provisions on:

  • Teacher promotion

  • Transfers

  • Disciplinary actions

  • Permanency for temporary teachers

  • Trade union rights

  • Management of early childhood development teachers and school staff

  • Status of institutional school teachers

  • Position alignment and adjustment

The Federation stated that this neglect ignores the spirit of the protest movement held during Chaitra–Baisakh earlier this year.

Statement from Leadership

In the statement signed by General Secretary Tula Bahadur Thapa and President Laxmi Kishor Subedi, it is written:

“We have not forgotten the energy and capacity of the teachers’ and staff’s movement. Relevant parties must understand that we can once again bring forth a storm of protests.”

Next Steps

According to the statement, the Federation has called a National Committee meeting in Kathmandu on Bhadra 3 and 4 to decide the nature and schedule of the protest.
