Course Overview

The MA in Sociology program focuses on the theories and methods of sociology, with academic training in fieldwork and secondary data analysis. The MA in Sociology program is a two-year course divided into four semesters. A university examination is held every six months at the end of each semester.

The course includes 18 papers and a compulsory thesis in the fourth semester. There are 14 compulsory papers from the first to fourth semesters. Students can choose three optional courses in the third semester and one optional course in the fourth semester.

Eighty percent attendance in class is compulsory.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree recognized by Tribhuvan University in one of the accepted subject areas or disciplines.

Eligible backgrounds include Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, Nepalese History, Culture and Archaeology, Psychology, History, Home Science, Geography, Economics, and Political Science. Applicants from the faculty of education, management, and law are also eligible. Applicants from the institute of medicine, engineering, forestry, agriculture, and animal science are also eligible.

Admission Procedure

Applicants seeking admission to MA Sociology must appear in a one-hour entrance examination conducted by the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tribhuvan University.

Applicants who do not appear in the entrance examination or do not obtain the minimum qualifying score are not admitted. Admission is based on the merit list and the enrollment capacity of the Central Department of Sociology or campus.

Evaluation System

Evaluation is based on 40 percent internal assessment and 60 percent external examination.

Internal evaluation is carried out by the department or faculty and includes:

• Class attendance: 10 marks

• Class participation, discussion, and presentation with précis: 10 marks

• Term paper writing: 10 marks

• Class test writing: 10 marks

The 60 percent external evaluation is conducted by the Dean’s Office through the final written examination. In practical courses, the external evaluation is also conducted practically in the computer lab.
