Tribhuvan University MA Nepali Curriculum Under Dispute
The new Master's level (MA) Nepali curriculum introduced by Tribhuvan University five months ago has come under serious controversy.
The curriculum development process has been accused of being biased and exclusionary. Specific allegations include incorporating the syllabus of a personal publication directly into the official university curriculum by the then head of the subject committee.
Complaint Submitted to Parliamentary Committee
These allegations have reached the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee of the Federal Parliament.
After a preliminary review, the committee found the matter to be of serious nature. A subcommittee under the parliamentary committee has issued a three-day ultimatum to the university and formally communicated the concern to the Office of the Vice Chancellor on Asar 22.
Accusations Regarding Content Duplication
The complaint filed by the Women's Literary Group alleges that the syllabus from the book Diaspora Ko Saidhantik Swaroop (2079) authored by Prof. Dr. Khagendra Prasad Luitel—who was then the Chair of the Nepali Subject Committee—has been directly included in the new curriculum.
Prof. Dr. Luitel is also the former Head of the Central Department of Nepali at Tribhuvan University.
Claims of Imbalance and Exclusion
Rita Khatri, coordinator of the Women's Literary Group, stated that not only was the subject list from Diaspora Ko Saidhantik Swaroop copied into the curriculum, but the overall credit hours and course structure are also imbalanced.
She mentioned that despite formally raising these concerns—with supporting evidence—to the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Rector, and the current Chair of the Nepali Subject Committee, the university administration failed to respond or take necessary action.
