CTEVT Cancels Entrance Exams for Technical Programs from 2082
From this academic year, students seeking admission into various educational programs under the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) will no longer be required to sit for an entrance examination.
Past Challenges in the Admission Process
Previously, after the publication of the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) results, students interested in CTEVT programs had to fill out a separate entrance exam form. After a long wait, they would sit for the entrance exam and await the results. Even after qualifying, many students faced difficulties securing admission to their preferred institution.
CTEVT’s New Directive for 2082
A recent CTEVT board meeting, chaired by the Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, Mr. Raghuji Pant, issued a new “Admission Directive 2082.” It officially removes the requirement for entrance exams in the Pre-Diploma, Diploma, and Certificate Level programs.
Online Application and Selection Process
According to the new system, students must select their desired program and institution and submit an online application form. The CTEVT Examination Committee will then prepare a merit list based on the SEE marks submitted with the application.
Merit-Based Evaluation System
While preparing the merit list:
-
SEE GPA will carry a total weight of 4.0.
-
Students from community schools will receive an additional 1 point.
-
Students from private or institutional schools will receive an additional 0.85 point.
Unified Admission System for Scholarships
This revised admission system will also apply to scholarship quotas offered by various technical institutes under CTEVT.
Previously, entrance exams used questions based on Grade 10 Mathematics, English, and Science. However, repeated issues of question paper leaks and students failing to meet entrance cutoffs resulted in many seats going unfilled despite available quotas.
Elimination of Previous Barriers
With the introduction of this directive, students will now be selected strictly according to the quota approved for each technical institute. It also means students will no longer be excluded from technical education simply because they did not pass an entrance exam.
Minimum SEE Score Requirement Still Applies
CTEVT has set minimum SEE score requirements for admission, which vary according to the program. Different programs, such as Nursing, Pharmacy, and Engineering, have distinct cutoff marks at both diploma and pre-diploma levels.
Programs Affected
The programs currently in operation under CTEVT include:
-
Diploma in Nursing
-
Diploma in Pharmacy
-
Engineering Diploma Programs
-
Pre-Diploma Technical Courses
Expert Opinion on the Reform
According to Mr. Nirmal Sapkota, General Secretary of the Health and Technology Science Forum, this change will make technical education more accessible to students. He stated,
“Instead of deploying staff for managing entrance exams, efforts can now be redirected towards implementing academic calendars and improving quality.”
