Private Schools to Terminate Agreement with Kathmandu University
On Bhadra 11, 2082 (Wednesday), the Joint Struggle Committee of private school operators issued a statement announcing the termination of their agreement with Kathmandu University (KU).
The committee strongly opposed the remarks made by Prof. Dr. Bal Chandra Luintel of KU’s School of Education. It stated that his expression was a serious attack on the interests, dignity, and long-term existence of the private education sector.
Concerns Over Education Bill 2080
According to the statement, provisions in the Education Bill 2080 that require private schools to be transformed into "non-profit companies" and to provide "full scholarships" would have a serious impact on the sustainability, investment, and service delivery of private schools.
The committee described these provisions as impractical and discriminatory and emphasized that it has been conducting peaceful protests against them.
Criticism of KU Professor’s Remarks
The committee further accused Prof. Dr. Luintel of portraying private schools as “profit-oriented” and “elements that spoil education.” It stated that such remarks show disrespect towards the private education sector, devalue the labor of thousands of teachers and staff, and question the long-standing cooperation between KU and private schools.
Call for Cooperation and Protection of Private Schools
Drawing the attention of Kathmandu University, the committee urged other private schools across the country to make cooperation compulsory, as KU has done. It reaffirmed its commitment to continue movements to protect investments and safeguard the existence of private schools.
The committee reiterated its position in favor of educational quality, equal opportunities, accountability, and innovation, while opposing divisive ideas.
