Rajarshi Janak University (RJU) is a public university based in Janakpurdham, Madhesh Province, Nepal. Established in 2017 AD under the Rajarshi Janak University Act, 2074, it operates as an autonomous and organized corporate institution under federal law.

The university currently carries academic activity across management, science and technology, engineering, humanities, law, health sciences, agriculture, environmental studies, education, and research-oriented postgraduate study. Its programs are delivered through constituent campuses and affiliated institutions.

Rajarshi Janak University was established as a multidisciplinary university with a legal mandate extending across a wide range of fields. Current activity includes management, computing, civil engineering, law, journalism, Mithila arts, agriculture, public health, medical laboratory technology, environmental studies, education, and postgraduate research.

RJU takes its name from Rajarshi Janak, the historical-philosophical figure associated with ancient Mithila and Janakpur. The name connects the university with the cultural setting of Janakpurdham while its academic structure covers contemporary professional, technical, humanities, health, and research fields.

The university now operates through several constituent campuses rather than a single academic site. University Campus in Janakpurdham carries a multidisciplinary role, while other constituent campuses have more specific academic associations. RJU also works through affiliated institutions authorized to deliver university programs.

Program availability does not remain identical across every campus or academic session. Admission notices, campus authorization, and program intake determine where a course is available during a particular cycle.

Establishment and Legal Foundation

The Rajarshi Janak University Act, 2074 forms the university’s legal foundation. The Act establishes RJU as an autonomous and organized corporate institution and places its central office in Dhanusha District.

Its legal status gives the university the institutional capacity to hold property, enter contracts, exercise rights and obligations, and operate through statutory bodies and university rules. The legal framework also provides the foundation for academic governance, administration, curriculum decisions, research, examinations, staffing, and campus organization.

The purpose of the university extends beyond the operation of individual degree programs. Its statutory framework connects higher education with wider access, skilled human-resource development, academic improvement, teaching, research, and national development.

This wider mandate explains the difference between subjects authorized under the Act and programs operating during a particular academic year. Inclusion of a field such as forestry, tourism, Ayurveda, or another discipline in the university’s legal scope does not itself mean an active intake exists in that subject.

The Act also contains a provision relating to Ramswarup Ramsagar Multiple Campus in Janakpurdham as a foundation or base campus. The current constituent structure consists of University Campus, Gaushala Engineering Campus, Pandit Mangal Kumar Upadhyay Multiple Campus, and Mahagadhimai Campus.

Governance and Administration

RJU operates through a statutory governance structure established under the university Act. The University Senate, or Sabha, is the highest institutional body within this framework.

Prof. (Dr.) Shyam Narayan Labh is listed as Vice-Chancellor within the current university administration. Academic development under the university now reaches engineering, information technology, computer science, health sciences, environmental science, management, humanities, law, Eastern philosophy, and related postgraduate study.

Academic Faculties

RJU currently organizes its academic work under four principal faculties. Each faculty covers a different combination of undergraduate, postgraduate, professional, or research-oriented study.

Faculty of Management

The Faculty of Management covers study from bachelor level to postgraduate research.

Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelor in Digital Business Management (BDBM) form its current undergraduate offerings. BDBM gives the faculty a separate digital-business program alongside general business administration.

Postgraduate study includes the Master of Business Administration (MBA). The faculty also includes M.Phil. in Management, extending its academic scope into research-oriented study.

The faculty therefore covers three academic stages represented in RJU’s current structure: undergraduate management education, master’s-level management study, and M.Phil. research.

Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering

The Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering covers computing, engineering, applied science, and related postgraduate study.

Its bachelor programs include:

• Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology (BSc CSIT)

• Bachelor of Civil Engineering (BE Civil)

The faculty also has postgraduate activity in science, technology, environmental study, and construction-management-related fields.

Program location differs within the faculty. BE Civil has a direct association with Gaushala Engineering Campus, while BIT and BSc CSIT appear within the wider university academic structure.

Faculty of Humanities & Law

The Faculty of Humanities & Law combines law, computer applications, journalism, Mithila arts, and Eastern philosophy.

Faculty of Health Sciences

The Faculty of Health Sciences currently has academic activity in public health and medical laboratory technology.

Its confirmed bachelor programs are:

• Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (BSc MLT)

These programs form the current health-science component of RJU’s academic structure.

Health programs operate within an academic field where university admission, practical components, and professional requirements can involve separate conditions. Those requirements depend on the applicable program and academic cycle.

Bachelor Programs Offered by RJU

RJU’s current bachelor-level portfolio spans management, computing, engineering, humanities, law, agriculture, and health sciences.

The main bachelor entrance cycle covered BCA, BMA, BJMC, BALLB, BBA, BDBM, BIT, BE Civil, BSc CSIT, and BSc Agriculture under the relevant faculties.

BPH and BSc MLT operate through health-science admission activity. LLB follows a separate law admission process.

This arrangement means RJU does not use one identical admission route for every bachelor program. The applicable entrance process depends on the academic field and intake.

Campus assignment also differs. BE Civil is associated with Gaushala Engineering Campus. Pandit Mangal Kumar Upadhyay Multiple Campus is associated with BBA and BSc Agriculture, while BIT appears in connection with Mahagadhimai Campus. University Campus carries programs across several academic fields.

Postgraduate and Research-Oriented Programs

RJU’s postgraduate portfolio extends across management, law, computing, environmental studies, education, philosophy, and construction management.

MBA appears within current postgraduate admission and examination activity. M.Phil. in Management had an admission cycle.

M.Phil. in Eastern Philosophy also appears in current academic activity and is associated with University Campus.

LLM has separate admission and orientation activity, while MCA, MSc Environmental Science & Management, and PGDE have appeared within University Campus postgraduate admissions.

Construction-management postgraduate study appears under more than one title in RJU academic activity. The wording includes “M.Sc. in Construction Management” and “Master’s in Construction Management Engineering.”

The postgraduate portfolio has expanded beyond the university’s earlier management and computing concentration. Current study now reaches law, philosophy, environmental science, education, and construction management alongside established management and computing programs.

Constituent Campuses

RJU currently has four constituent campuses. These campuses give the university an academic presence in Janakpurdham and other locations in Madhesh Province.

University Campus

University Campus in Janakpurdham functions as the university’s main multidisciplinary academic location.

Its academic activity covers management, law, information technology, humanities, health sciences, and postgraduate study. Several postgraduate programs have appeared under University Campus admission activity, including MCA, MSc Environmental Science & Management, and PGDE.

The campus also has an association with M.Phil. in Eastern Philosophy.

Its multidisciplinary structure distinguishes it from constituent campuses with more narrowly identified academic roles.

Gaushala Engineering Campus

Gaushala Engineering Campus is located in Gaushala, Mahottari. It became operational as RJU’s second constituent campus in 2023.

Bachelor of Civil Engineering is the principal program identified with the campus.

Its inclusion in the constituent structure gives RJU a dedicated engineering-focused academic location outside Janakpurdham.

Pandit Mangal Kumar Upadhyay Multiple Campus

Pandit Mangal Kumar Upadhyay Multiple Campus is located in Gaur, Rautahat.

It is part of RJU’s constituent-campus structure and is associated with two current academic programs:

• Bachelor of Business Administration

• Bachelor of Science in Agriculture

The combination gives the campus an academic role spanning management and agriculture.

Mahagadhimai Campus

Mahagadhimai Campus is located in Bariyarpur.

It is one of the university’s four constituent campuses. Bachelor of Information Technology appears in association with the campus within RJU’s academic structure.

The campus adds another location for technology-focused bachelor study within the constituent network.

Affiliated Campuses

RJU also operates through an affiliation model.

Affiliated institutions deliver university programs under academic authorization granted by RJU. The university’s affiliated-campus network extends beyond the four constituent campuses.

A fixed total of affiliated campuses is not used because affiliation status and program approval can change. Earlier references to 17 affiliated colleges do not represent the complete current affiliation structure.

Affiliation also applies at the program level. An institution’s affiliation with RJU does not mean every university program is automatically available at that campus.

The practical academic relationship therefore involves both the institution and the specific program authorized for delivery.

Admission System

RJU uses program-specific entrance and admission notices rather than one permanent university-wide admission rule.

It covered the main bachelor programs under Humanities and Law, Management, and Science, Technology and Engineering.

For that admission cycle, the application fee was NPR 1,000 and payment was made through eSewa. The amount belonged to that specific intake.

The admission process generally involves the following stages when required by the relevant program:

1. Selection of the program and authorized campus.

2. Review of the academic eligibility conditions for the intake.

3. Online application through the admission portal.

4. Submission of required academic and identification documents.

5. Payment of the prescribed application charge.

6. Entrance examination or another stated selection process where applicable.

7. Merit, quota, registration, and admission procedures for selected applicants.

Separate admission arrangements apply to programs outside the main bachelor entrance cycle. Health sciences, LLB, LLM, M.Phil., and several postgraduate programs follow their respective notices and selection conditions.

Bachelor Admission Eligibility

These criteria belong to the stated bachelor entrance cycle and do not define admission requirements for BPH, BSc MLT, LLB, LLM, M.Phil., or the other postgraduate programs.

Several programs include subject-specific conditions as well as an overall grade or percentage requirement. BIT, BE Civil, BSc CSIT, and BSc Agriculture are examples where academic background or subject preparation forms part of eligibility.

Fees and Intake-Related Payments

For the main bachelor entrance cycle, the application fee was NPR 1,000 and payment was made through eSewa.

This figure represents the entrance application charge for that intake rather than a permanent fee for every RJU program.

Tuition, registration, admission, examination, and other academic charges can differ by program and admission cycle.

Scholarship, quota, inclusion, or financial-support conditions may also be tied to individual admission cycles rather than one university-wide permanent arrangement.

Curriculum structure can differ according to the academic program and batch. Semester arrangement, credits, subject requirements, practical work, laboratory components, fieldwork, projects, thesis work, or internship requirements depend on the curriculum assigned to the program.

Entrance syllabi and model questions also form part of the academic resources used for programs with entrance examinations.

The Central Examination Office manages core examination administration at RJU.

The Rajarshi Janak University Research Journal (RJURJ) has appeared in multiple volumes. Volume 3(2) was announced in December 2025, and the journal has a presence on Nepal Journals Online (NepJOL).
