
Mandatory Registration of Social Media Platforms in Nepal
Ministry of Communication and Information Technology Notice- In the case of contempt of court (Case No. 080-CF-0012), the Full Bench of the Honorable Supreme Court has issued a directive order in the name of the Government of Nepal requiring both domestic and foreign-origin online and social media platforms to mandatorily register with the concerned authority before operation.
In compliance with this directive, the Government of Nepal (Council of Ministers), through its decision dated 2082/05/09, has made the following matters public:
Registration Requirement

All social media platforms currently operating in Nepal but not yet registered must compulsorily register at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology within seven (7) days from the publication of this notice.

Each platform must designate the following within Nepal:

A Point of Contact
-
A Resident Grievance Handling Officer

An Officer to oversee compliance with self-regulation

Enforcement and Action

Platforms that fail to register or fail to make contact for registration within the specified period will be deactivated within Nepal.

If registration is completed later, the platforms will be reactivated immediately upon approval.

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has been directed to enforce these measures.
Application Procedure

Any person, company, or institution wishing to operate a social media platform in Nepal must apply for registration in accordance with the Social Media Use Regulation Directive, 2080 issued by the Government of Nepal.

Applications must be submitted to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology using the prescribed format of Schedule-1 of the Directive, along with the required documents.

Applicants must also designate a Point of Contact, a Resident Grievance Handling Officer, and a Compliance Officer for self-regulation within Nepal.
