From Educational Management to STEAM Leadership

Educational Management has been part of KUSOED’s work in educational leadership. The Department of Educational Leadership, established in 1998, developed programs concerned with leadership and management of educational institutions and programs.

Its academic interests include strategic planning, program and project design, institutional management, implementation, evaluation, and educational leadership. The Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Management was developed within this academic setting and has since been updated as STEAM Leadership, with the program running collaboratively with STEAM Education.

This change gives the postgraduate diploma a broader course structure. Management and leadership remain central, while the curriculum also covers pedagogy, curriculum and assessment, ICT, action research, and the development of learning materials and laboratory environments for STEAM leadership.

Eligibility

Eligibility: A bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university.

The eligibility provision allows graduates from different academic backgrounds to enter the program rather than limiting admission to applicants holding a bachelor’s degree in education.

Admission, entrance, selection, and other academic requirements operate according to the rules and regulations of Kathmandu University (KU).

Duration and Credit Structure

Duration: One year

Semester system: Two semesters

Total credits: 27 credit hours

The curriculum is divided into three components:

  • 3 credits of core study

  • 21 credits of specialization courses

  • 3 credits of practicum

The structure gives most of the credit weight to leadership and STEAM-related specialization while retaining an educational foundations course and a practical component.

What Students Study

The program brings together educational administration, leadership, teaching practice, research, curriculum, technology, and the management of STEAM-oriented educational settings.

Fundamental of Leadership and Management addresses the management and leadership component carried forward from the program’s Educational Management background. Transformative Leadership adds a leadership-focused area of study, while Innovative Pedagogy connects leadership with teaching and learning practices.

Curriculum and Assessment introduces another part of educational responsibility: understanding how curriculum and assessment relate to educational practice. ICT in STEAM Leadership places technology within the leadership setting, while Material and Lab Development for STEAM Leadership addresses learning resources and laboratory development.

Educational Action Research introduces research connected with educational practice. The practicum adds a practical requirement alongside the taught courses.

Admission and Entrance

Admission to the program follows Kathmandu University rules and regulations. The same framework governs the applicable entrance and selection process.

Because KUSOED organizes admissions by program and intake, application schedules and admission procedures may differ between admission cycles. The program itself requires a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university.

KUSOED uses blended and multimodal arrangements for postgraduate education. Individual intake arrangements may include online and face-to-face learning components.

Assessment, Examination, and Academic Award

Curriculum administration, assessment, examinations, results, academic progression, and completion requirements for the postgraduate diploma are governed by Kathmandu University rules and regulations.

Students are required to complete the prescribed academic components of the program, including its core course, specialization courses, and practicum. The academic award is made through Kathmandu University after fulfillment of the requirements applicable to the postgraduate diploma.

Academic Focus of the Program

The course is particularly relevant to educational leadership and management because its curriculum covers subjects directly connected with the operation and development of educational settings.

Its main academic areas include:

  • Leadership and management

  • Educational philosophy

  • Pedagogy

  • Curriculum and assessment

  • Educational action research

  • ICT in educational leadership

  • STEAM learning environments

  • Practical educational engagement

Rather than treating management as administration alone, the curriculum connects leadership with teaching, curriculum, technology, research, and practical work.
