Call to Ensure Students’ Right to Education Amid Teachers’ Continuous Protest
Various organizations have demanded that the right of students to education be ensured, stating that students have been deprived of learning due to the continuous protest of teachers.
The Central Committee of the Parents’ Association Nepal drew the attention of the National Human Rights Commission on Sunday, stating that around 5.5 million students of community schools have been deprived of their right to education due to the teachers’ protest. A delegation led by the president of the Parents’ Association, Suprabhat Bhandari, submitted the letter of concern on Sunday, stating that the right to education of students has been violated due to the teachers' protest.
The association has also alerted the commission that the Grade 12 examination could also be affected by the teachers’ protest. The annual examination of Grade 12 is starting from Baisakh 11.
On the same day, the student organization ANNFSU, affiliated with CPN-UML, also issued a statement stating that the protest conducted by closing schools has pushed the future of students into darkness. In the statement issued by the organization’s president Samik Badal, it is stated that the Education Bill must be tabled and passed in the Parliament and that the Teachers’ Federation should also opt for dialogue.
ANNFSU has also claimed that some interest groups close to private educational institutions are using the current protest as a cover to weaken public schools and pull students toward private institutions. Referring to the increase in student enrollment in private schools by eight percent annually over the past five years, ANNFSU stated that around seven hundred thousand students have been leaving public schools every year.
