Nepal Student Union Demands Merit-Based VC Appointment at Tribhuvan University
The Nepal Student Union (NSU) has called for the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Tribhuvan University based on merit and qualifications.
The union raised this demand amidst the current interim management situation at the university.
Opposition to Arbitrary Rules and Procedures
NSU President Dujang Sherpa issued a circular objecting to the actions of university officials who, according to him, have created and enforced regulations, directives, and procedures in violation of existing laws to fulfill their personal agendas.
He stated that it is disgraceful that such matters have reached the parliamentary committee for discussion.
Concern Over Political Interference in VC Appointment
The Nepal Student Union expressed strong suspicion that, by discarding the “Procedure for Selection and Recommendation of Vice-Chancellor” formulated in 2080 as an outcome of various educational campaigns and movements, there is now an attempt to return to politically divided appointments.
The union emphasized the need to revise loopholes in the current procedure and ensure the VC is appointed through open competition based on a merit system.
Directive for Nationwide Campaign Against Political Appointments
The union clearly indicated that it opposes any non-transparent, non-academic, and self-serving practices that prioritize the interests of political alliances and those close to power.
It has instructed its subordinate bodies to launch various campaigns against such unethical and interest-driven conduct.
