World Day Against Human Trafficking Observed at Kathmandu Model College

Kathmandu Model College (KMC Bagbazar) students from the second and third years of the BA program organized a special event to mark the World Day Against Human Trafficking.

The program was held in the college's seminar hall, with Anuradha Koirala, widely known as Nepal’s Mother Teresa and CNN Hero 2010, as the chief guest. She is also the founder and chairperson of Maiti Nepal.

The college stated that the primary aim of the event was to raise public awareness about the serious human rights issue of human trafficking and to strengthen the campaign against it.

According to BA Program Coordinator Elissaraj Rajopadhyaya, the event was designed with the hope that such student efforts would spark serious discussions and actions both within and beyond the college community, especially in the context of the millions of people—particularly women and children—falling victim to trafficking worldwide.

In her keynote address, Anuradha Koirala emphasized the importance of collective efforts at national, cross-border, and international levels to combat the increasing threat of human trafficking. She also participated in an interactive session with the students.

Student-Led Performances and Activities

  • Students staged a play that portrayed real-life cases of human trafficking with emotional depth.

  • Art exhibitions, including paintings, sketches, and posters, added a visual dimension to the awareness message.

  • A student-led research presentation explored the status and challenges of human trafficking in the Nepali context.

Insights from Guest Speakers

Madhu Gurung, Executive Director of Vishwas Nepal, shared her thoughts and experiences. She stressed that human trafficking is a shared social issue and called for collective awareness and protection of the rights of trafficking survivors.

College Principal Surendra Subedi honored the chief guest, Anuradha Koirala, with a traditional shawl. He also thanked the students and all contributors to the program’s success and assured continued support for similar initiatives in the future.

According to Dhruva Prasad Timalsena, Head of Internal Quality Assurance, the event was not merely ceremonial but a meaningful step toward embodying the day’s message. He noted that Kathmandu Model College regularly organizes such programs to foster students’ holistic development.

Student Engagement and Commitment

Students were actively involved in:

  • Coordinating with partner organizations

  • Managing logistics and venue

  • Preparing educational materials

The college highlighted that this level of student involvement reflects the growing social awareness and engagement of youth in issues of justice and advocacy.

The United Nations observes World Day Against Human Trafficking annually on July 30, encouraging action to end trafficking and protect victims.
